Chagford Local Attractions and Things To Do
The church of St Michael the Archangel
This fine church was originally constructed in the 13th century, although most of what we can see today is from later periods. The 15th century tower is one its outstanding parts while the roof bosses include unusual features such as the three rabbits symbol associated with tin miners.
The church has a memorial to Mary Whiddon who died in October 1641. She is believed to have been the real life figure upon whom the novel Lorna Doone by R D Blackmore was based, with the legend saying that she was killed leaving the church on the day of her wedding.
